The trail ranges in elevation from 6,240 feet at the outlet of Lake Tahoe to 10,338 feet at Relay Peak in Nevada. There are a number of charter outfits around South Lake Tahoe that offer mackinaw fishing packages. These deep lake fish can weigh more than 30 pounds and are quite a thrill to catch. There are several places around South Shore Lake Tahoe to find your ideal water craft for summer fun.Ĭatch a big fish: Lake Tahoe has its share of sizable fish including the mackinaw lake trout that can be found shore side or by charter boat. Water adventure: Find that tranquil peace while paddling a kayak, discover your balance on a stand up paddleboard or skim the waves behind a ski boat or Jet Ski. Hit the beach: In Lake Tahoe there’s no shortage of hidden coves and large public beaches nearby. After gaining a ridge, the climbing eases as the path turns north and leads through scattered trees on the mountain’s south slope.Biking: Whether you like cruising along wide paths with other cyclists or soaring down the side of a mountain on a single-track, Tahoe South is crossed with an extensive network of on and off road bicycle trails. Here the route becomes steep and leads over a large talus slope. The path veers west through Cathedral Basin as you climb above treeline. There are four trail junctions between Cathedral Lake and the summit, some offering variations that also lead to the summit, but the simplest approach is to simply turn right at all four going up (and left at all four going down). This is the last reliable source of water and you’re going to need plenty before the climb is over. Stay right as a side trail leads left and steeply down to Fallen Leaf Lake. Enjoy the shade of the forest while you can because you’re about to climb into a realm of rock, sun and wind. The wilderness boundary and Floating Island Lake follow within the next mile. Fallen Leaf Lake comes into view in about half a mile. Hike through the forest as the trail begins to climb. Get a self-issued permit at the trailhead to enter Desolation Wilderness. Turn left onto Mount Tallac Road and drive about a mile to the parking area and trailhead. From South Lake Tahoe, take Highway 89 northwest from the Highway 50 junction and drive 3.9 miles toward Emerald Bay. ![]()
